Where Will Your Quest Take You?

Summer Camp_Newsletter_Fall21

The Herskovitz girls (ages 8 and 4) went to Nursery School at Central Queens (mom too!) and have attended health and wellness classes ranging from soccer to dance…but if you ask them what their favorite program is they don’t hesitate to scream back “camp!” This Summer took that to a new level.

“Our oldest loved her summers and had so much fun at the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds (HKC) doing all of the traditional camp activities,” said Lauren Herskovitz. “But this summer she learned how to do computer programming, watched – baby chicks hatching, she went ziplining, planted and grew vegetables, and had the best summer of her life!”

The girls may have previously attended camp at HKC, where Commonpoint Queens has been spending its summers for over 40 years, but this summer was extra special because it was the inaugural summer of Island Quest Day Camp – a consortium program in partnership with UJA-Federation of New York, the Friedberg JCC, the Gural JCC, and the Suffolk Y JCC.

“Commonpoint did an amazing job keeping us engaged during the pandemic. The girls took virtual dance and sports classes, and I worked out with my favorite instructors in awesome classes like Zumba and Kickboxing. But when I told the girls they were going back to camp, they were so happy after a hectic school year. And this summer did not let them down.”

Almost 600 campers enjoyed new and improved facilities at HKC, including new basketball and tennis courts and a BRAND NEW – heated – pool complex built at the top of the campgrounds, as well as a new choice-based curriculum centered around specialties in Sports, STEM-based learning, and the exploration of adventures and nature.

We can’t wait to see where our Quest takes us in future summers, but one thing we know for sure is that the countdown to summer 2022 has already begun in the Herskovitz household!
