Last year, our garden produced over 600 portions of fresh, local produce for our community food pantry!
Spring has come to our neighborhood and we are preparing for loads of veggies for the Commonpoint Queens Food Pantry! That means lots of work tending to the the garden, from seedlings to harvest. This year we are extending the opportunity to help feed our neighbors by inviting people who have their own gardens to grow vegetables for the pantry at home. We’re calling it, “Volunteer Your Garden.”
We want to get as many volunteers as we can together to kick off the season and to set up the volunteer days. At these meetings, we will also share practical information as well as some supplies.
We’ve got two meetings planned:
Sunday, May 19th, at 11 AM and
Sunday, June 23rd, at 11 AM.
These meetings will be at the Pantry Garden at 108-13 67th Rd. Forest Hills, NY 11375 (the white house next to Central Queens with the Pantry Garden in the front yard).
The topic for the meeting will be “Seeds and Seedlings.” In addition to discussing how to get the growing season started, we will have some plants and seeds to give away to those who can grow at home. We’ll also have some food for the gardeners. (At the June meeting, we’ll discuss “Good Bugs, Bad Bugs” and make our own pest and fungus controls.)
If you can’t make the meeting, you can still volunteer. Please contact Jonathan Shevin at [email protected] for more information.
