Senior Fitness in Little Neck and Bayside

Exercise is important for all age groups, but particularly for adults 60 and over. We offer adult and senior fitness classes to help enhance the lives of our community members.

The Health & Wellness Department is dedicated to the health, physical and social development of all members. Our pre-school, nursery and junior sports programs are designed to coordinate eye-hand, eye-foot, gross and fine motor and balance skills. Our adult and senior program is designed to keep those involved in shape and up-to-date on proper exercise and nutrition information.

Socialization, working at your own pace and having fun in a safe environment are the main goals of the department. Our staff is professionally trained to enhance the individual development of all who participate. We are proud to offer a well-rounded program for ALL AGES. You are never too old to exercise!

 

Senior Fitness

There will be no fitness classes Monday, May 30 due to the Memorial Day holiday. Please note that Classic Aerobics with Sheila on Tuesdays at 1pm is being offered in a hybrid format virtually and in person at Sam Field starting Tuesday, May 31. Please note also that the time for Silver Sneakers Senior Aerobics with Sheila on Thursdays has been changed to 10:15 am and will only be held virtually starting May 19. 

Pre-registration for in person classes at Bay Terrace is required by calling Elise at 718-423-611 ext. 223. Pre-registration with Fern at 718-225-6750 ext. 233 is required for in-person classes at Sam Field. For virtual classes, click on the link to register.

Zumba Gold – A Latin-dance inspired workout accessible for seniors regardless of fitness level
*Please note SilverSneakers Zumba Gold is currently being offered virtually via Zoom and at Sam Field Fridays at 1pm

Tai Chi – In this traditional Chinese form of exercise, basic positions are performed in a slow, continuous sequence. Unlike exercise which relies on muscular force and tension, the graceful movements of Tai Chi emphasize relaxation, straightness, and true balance.

SilverSneakers Senior Aerobics – Chair assisted group exercise focuses on increasing muscular strength, endurance and range of movement to improve activities for daily living. Customized for adults 65 years or older and for individuals declared Medicare disabled. Sponsored by Oxford Medicare Advantage and Empire Blue Cross & Blue Shield.

Strength Training for Better Balance –  Maintain joint range of motion and flexibility with gentle exercises for every part of the body. Increasing your core strength for better balance.

Aerobic Dance – Fun and fitness for beginner and more experienced dancers.

Senior Line Dancing – Fun and fitness for beginner and more experienced dancers.

Senior Stretch – Enjoy gentle exercise and stretches geared to increasing muscle strength and range of motion at your own pace.

Senior Yoga – Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of seated and standing postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of motion.

Senior Circuit – Increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Exercise equipment is provided. A chair is used for standing support, stretching and relaxation exercises.

These classes use the techniques of the late Joseph Pilates to increase “core strength” and develop strong elongated muscles, flexibility, power and balance.

**We’d also like to advise our senior exercise members to note their surroundings before participating in our classes. We are working to provide age-appropriate classes, including Silver Sneakers classes, but ask for you to please use extreme caution, make sure that you are not having balance difficulties before being active, and that you have a stable ground below you if you are exercising.
