Programs for Children with Developmental Disabilities in Forest Hills

Commonpoint Queens is proud to offer programs designed to meet the social, emotional, educational, and recreational needs of children with autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities.

Commonpoint Queens is proud to offer programs specifically designed to meet the social, emotional, educational, and recreational needs of children with autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities. An individual interview is required for each of these programs so that our professional team can welcome your child and assist in the selection of programs that would be most successful.

Classes observe social distancing protocols in accordance with New York State Department of Health guidelines. All instructors and unvaccinated class participants are required to wear masks.

Cinematography
6 Mon. beginning May 16 (5/16, 5/23, 6/6, 6/13, 6/20, 6/27)

Want to make a movie? Come work with professional filmmakers, producers and your peers to create short films. This hands-on experience will put you behind the camera and maybe even in front of it! You will participate in a variety of on-set production roles including Director, Sound, Cinematographer, Producer and Actor! You have a story to tell, come learn how to make it a movie.

Gardening
6 Thurs. beginning May 12 (5/12, 5/19, 5/26, 6/2, 6/9, 6/16)

Participating gardeners will learn to care for plants from seed to harvest through hands-on experience. We will work primarily outside, sometimes standing or on the ground. Gardeners should be comfortable with tools and ready to get into the soil. There will be some heavy work as well as delicate handling of our living plants. We will process and pack veggies and fruits for distribution by the food pantry.

Magic with SO Fun City

SO Fun City is here! Join us for Magic, Messy Experiments, Circus Skills and More! A fun new surprise each week led by the Fun Experts of SO Fun City who specialize in inclusive programming for schools and camps around the country.

Cooking with Melissa
5 Sun. beginning May 15 (5/15, 5/22, 6/5, 6/12, 6/26)
3:45-4:30pm

Teaching children to cook helps inspire confidence and creativity, healthier meals, and fun. Classes involve hands-on learning about ingredients, personal hygiene and food safety, and cooking and baking techniques. They’ll learn where food comes from and how to create healthy, nutritious meals that are also delicious.

Internship Opportunities for teenagers with IEPs

In collaboration with our High School and College Success team we have identified students with IEPs and are now offering – paid – supportive internships with Commonpoint Queens programs. Internships are being offered at our Kids Korner After School Program, the Central Queens Food Pantry, in our Special Services Enrichment programs, as well as our Special Services recreational programs at Central Queens. Ongoing Classes:

Adaptive Swim
8 Sundays beginning April 3
3:00-3:45pm

This course is a beginner class for children with disabilities.  Students will learn safety skills and water acclimation. Students will learn basic aquatics skills such as blowing bubbles, kicking and putting their faces in the water. Concepts are introduced through fun games and activities. A parent or support staff is required to join in the water with each child.

Karate
8 Sundays beginning April 3
4:00-4:45pm

Our Karate class helps children redirect their natural impulses toward aggression and channels them in constructive, helpful, and beneficial ways, while helping them learn about respect, focus, honor and discipline.

Soccer Stars/Basketball Buddies
8 Wednesdays beginning April 6
6:00-7:00pm
$150

This 1 hour class is run by a physical education instructor along with other staff including a licensed social worker. Each child learns specific basketball skills and social skills. This is a great way for children to socialize with their peers while learning social skills and sports each week.
