We’re excited to share that Commonpoint Queens has a unique opportunity: to pilot Island Quest Day Camp, an innovative summer experience rooted in community and core Jewish values, starting in summer 2020. Campers ages 4 to 15 will create a personalized summer adventure while forging lasting friendships and discovering new strengths. This program will replace Commonpoint Queens Day Camp while keeping some of our popular traditions, such as carnival, Maccabiah and overnights.
Also, as part of the pilot program this summer, you will see the start of an infrastructure upgrade at the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds; the $9.4 million renovation includes the construction of an aquatics complex with three pools; new sports fields and courts; and pavilions to replace the familiar shelters.
Then, by summer 2021, Commonpoint Queens, along with three other agencies across Long Island, will officially launch Island Quest as a premier day camp that draws upon each organization’s strengths, resources and expertise. We also have partnered with the Foundation for Jewish Camp to maximize our potential.
We are also proud to announce that Melissa Algranati will oversee Island Quest, for both the pilot and the inaugural summers. As many of you know, Melissa now serves as director of Explorer Day Camp, which she helped launch and nurture for the past decade. William Lopez, former assistant director for Explorer, has been named its director for summer 2020, though Melissa will continue to serve in an advisory role to ensure a seamless transition.
And finally, we will continue to communicate details about Island Quest and look forward to your ongoing and valuable feedback. Please share your thoughts with us via our online suggestion box at https://www.commonpointqueens.org/camp-suggestion-box/.
